Frequently asked questions

Zakat (obligatory tax) is a financial ibādet to be paid annually. Zakat means that wealthy Muslims give one fortieth (1/40th) of their possessions each year to one of the eight groups proclaimed in the Qur'ān-i Kerīm.

Your Zakat is primarily used for food parcels and aid projects with which we support people in need in Africa. This includes regular meals, emergency supplies and projects that improve people's lives in the long term.

„The Muslim - who is of age (has reached sexual maturity), sane, free and free of debt - has possessions in excess of the basic needs in the amount of Nisāb, which has lasted for one year.“The little Ilmihal, p.223

Zakat is only payable on real estate if the property is intended as a commodity, i.e. if it was bought with a view to reselling it. In this case, the current market value is used and two and a half per cent zakat is paid on this.For properties that are rented out, no zakat is payable on the value of the property. Zakat is only charged on the assets saved from the rental income as soon as these exceed the minimum amount (Nisab) over a complete year.
