The sadaka-i fitr is a sadaka that every Muslim who fulfils the conditions must hand in (wajib). It is currently around 15 euros per person. The conditions are as follows: The Muslim must have reached the end of the month of Ramadan. Excluding his basic needs for living, he must still have at least 80.18 gr. gold or equivalent in money or merchandise. The sadaka-i fitr is also a wajib for the sick who were unable to fast in the month of Ramadan, as well as for those who are travelling and those who are unable to fast due to old age.
The fitr was made obligatory by Allah before the Zekat and in the same year as fasting in the month of Ramadan. The sadaka-i fitr is a wajib that is established with mashhûr-hadîs-i sherîfs. The sadaka-i fitr leads to the acceptance of fasting and to being freed from the hardships of death and the punishment of the grave. It is an aid to remove the needs of the poor and to allow them to share in the joy of Ramadan.
The duty of fitrah begins at dawn on the first day of Ramadan. However, it is better to fulfil this duty beforehand so that the poor recipients have the opportunity to attend to their needs before the Bayram prayer.
